Ransome-Kuti was the first woman to drive a car in Africa, She’s a Yoruba from South West Nigeria, Abeokuta.
Ransome-Kuti was the mother of popular Fela Anikulapo Kuti And she is also the auntie of African literature icon, Wole Soyinka.
Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti is one of the most celebrated African women of all time and her contribution speak for themselves.
She was known as Mother of Africa. And these are the reasons why. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was a teacher, political campaigner, women’s rights activist and traditional aristocrat in Nigeria.
Ransome-Kuti often visited her son Fela at his compound, and she was there on 18 February 1977 when close to 1,000 armed soldiers surrounded and stormed the property. As soon as the soldiers broke inside they began destroying property and assaulting the residents.
Ransome-Kuti was thrown from a second-floor window. Following the attack, she was hospitalised and eventually lapsed into a coma. She died on 13 April 1978 as a result of her injuries.
